The style of your music itself !
Now that I'm listening to it with the headphones on, I can also tell that there is some saturation on the vocals that could be behind this, but once again, this can be an artistic choice. Just see how Daft Punk edited their vocals like hell !

I've sent the link to your 'funkybeat' song to several people I know in the show business, including the producer-songwriter who'll probably be behind the #1 hit in France this year! ('Fais la poule'), I'll pass their feedback to you as soon as I get it (They don't - or very little - speak english, so they can't pass it to you directly).

aww man. couldnt you do it once i made the drums better, and redid the vocals. haha. i changed a fair amount since i posted this first. i have been working on it. all thats left now is the final vocal takes. which is probably tomorrow. because its late here and my landlord lives upstairs and he complains if i sing too loud. (which is usually singing at all)

like seriously... this was not even close to final product yet. this was not mixed or anything... i feel wierd about this being what other ppl will hear. because i just posted this track so you could comment on the vox... if thats all they're doing then ok. but.

sigh. nevermind. i hope they like it. Confused Very Happy

Oh my god. Is this your song and you in the chicken costume, TNK? The voice sounds like you, so does the mixing. I don't know if it looks like you though...

This is so stupid and childish and deplorable musical activity that I just can't.... Can't.... CAN'T STOP LISTENING TO IT! AHHHH! I BE FLAPPIN MY ARMS, SINGING ALONG, POULE POULE POULE!! My god. Happiest song I've heard in a long while.

This could very well be a hit among the youngsters of france. Poor them. POULE POULE!

No !
It's Sebasto, a singer from Bordeaux, south western France !
I'm not the composer nor the producer nor the performer of this track.

Exactly what the guys @ M6 (the TV channel that launched that track) said... The day after, the guy in the chicken suit got phone calls from ALL the big 4...

I assumed it was a final version, or atleast a version you considered as final, as you wanted advices on it, and just on the voice.

They will anyway probably listen to it only this week-end. Actually one of them - a songwriter who wrote 1300 lyrics - already listened to it and found nothing to complain about it on the issues you were pointing. He was a radio executive for years and he said that there might more be an audiance problem as your song does not sound like some top40 stuff rather than technical or vocal issues.
So basically his advice is to carefully choose the radio stations that play such kind of music.

he also pointed out that it's not 0dB mastered and that's what also may have been bugging the radios (you know, 0dB mastering is when the curves fill the screen... the kind of things sound engeneers hate but producers and radio executives love...). However, this is again a top40 stuff issue, which is probably wrong in other kinds of music.

I'll add them this remark, but seriously, I heard several productions coming out even of their studios and it often did not sound as your track already sounds (well, the guy behind the Poule song - 'Poule' means 'Chicken' in French - for exemple hasn't only made this song, but he composed & produced over 1100 songs since he got his 1st studio in 1974. He knows what one can do and I think he will not complain about the sound of your track, except maybe that 0dB mastering issue he's personally not very fond of... BTW, he asked me to get him patches and tips about how to use the Daichi Synth1 in the followup to the poule song, so you know, even after 33 years in the business, he's still learning too...).

EDIT : I got the answer from the 'Poule' producer.
He said that your voice is more than OK, but that the answer you got from the radios is typically one of a radio that does not want to play you for other reasons than your voice. As he said, some radios play nothing, some radios play everything, and some others are in between. The only thing that plays a role is the time you spend promoting your stuff, that's the only objective parameter that you can control if you want to make it (right : The poule song is already old - 2002 or 2003 I guess - and was rejected almost everywhere... and finally that guy in the chicken suit managed to sing it on TV, got kicked out of the TV show but still had enough airtime to get attention on his track and now it's being turned into a hit).

He also said that he just finished 'Do the chicken', the english adaptation... Guess you all outside France will get into the Chicken Mania too!

thanks the added feedback, but a couple things...

1. i didnt send this song to any radios yet, as ive only spent a total of 5-6 hours on this song.... so as aforementioned i didnt bother mixing anything super well... i just submitted this song to the forum for vocal advice...

2. i understand the 0db thing and how to attain it. but again this was just a creative zone-out that i had... and plus... im a little against the 0db thing, (albeit for radio there's no choice) because thats what volume knobs are for... and plus i dont see why the radios care anyways, they use even more compression at the station to mash every last bit of sound out of the song so... i say they can do that live...

3. i dont have a 3rd but im glad they liked it anyway... i will post the final copy of this song in the forum. i just need to resing the vox. but i have this major sore throat right now so it will probably be next week...

peace.

anyways thanks for going through the lengths and passing it on nevertheless.

I've however got some more advices :
1) You described it as a part of a party music project... Defined that way, It would probably be turned out. Defined as some kind of laidback house it would have much more chances.
2) Watch your song length : Unless you're a worldwide star like Madonna, the (commercial) radios do not play songs longer than 3:30 anymore. You can of course create songs that last for as long as you want, but if you want to get some radio airplay on commercial radios, also do a 3:30 or shorter radio edit of your song.

Unfortunately true...
But nowadays, there are some mastering soft and hardware that get to the 0dB limit without too much distortion (but still there is distortion, of course).

1) Because it sounds louder even unprocessed by them : Their executives (who often have very little technical experience) will think (even if it's wrong) that it's therefore better.
2) Because they can mash it even more that way !

Best regards, TNK

well. to be honest. im not planning this to be a commercial release... i just want to get an album done. i'll probably just release it to independant radios. they will usually play anything. haha. plus, if some label was interested i would make a demo with more condensed tracks. but i am not getting my hopes up for a commercial release...
