First track I ever completed...

Also one of the first I started... about 4-5 years ago Shocked I have many little track seedlings but I never seem to have the patience to finish any... If I continue with the same pace I might have like 10 tracks complete by the time I'm a pensioneer... Then I can release an album Laughing

Anyway,

Vantek - Oatmeal Automat

All Superwave. There's some issues with sound quality but I don't know how to fix it and it's actually not necessarily bad, it adds a certain charm.

Oh, and nice to meet you all, I guess. I think it's my first post ever on these forums. Looong time lurker though.

well welcome to madtracker ^..^

yeah i don't know where you're talking about sound quality. maybe if you pointed it out to me, i'd be able to find it. so many people nowadays have spectacular quality on their tracks, then intentionally mud them up to get a particular sound.

very nice track. kind of hard to follow at first, but tha's part of the charm in it. kind of an off beat bass line ... then everything falls in place. makes things more interesting.

... and where the heck did the name "oatmeal automat" come from? Laughing

Haha, the name is indeed very random...

LOL. Just a bunch of random silliness that I happened to come across the same evening as I was working on the track. I was considering making for that thread a photoshop of a slot machine spewing out oatmeal instead of coins. I didn't, but because of that it was on my mind so that's what I named the track when it came to that ^^ I always have trouble coming up with good names for tracks, sometimes I do feel strongly that I should call it a certain way but usually I have no good ideas and just have to go for something random.

It's fun that you pointed out how it's hard to follow at first, because since I was familiar with the track (inevitable given that I made it... Razz) I myself didn't even realise at all that first time listeners will have trouble following the initial bass line! But I can imagine the effect (for an example I can still never follow the beginning of LTJ Bukem - Atlantis even though I know the track) and I hope it's not bad and even instead charming as you say.

About the quality... there are a couple of clicks and pops here and there, and the bass sounds flawed (but not badly so). And also you know that... I don't even know how to name it, that rapid series of clicks, you know that one that is the absolute last thing you hear when the track ends? (By the way it's the Tim Horton's Can sample that's included in the default install lol, it's at a high pitch and filtered.) Something happened to that sound when converting from MadTracker. It sounds different in MadTracker. But it actually sounds better after the conversion. That's what I meant with sound quality issues adding charm.

EDIT a whole bunch of time later: I finally realised what that sound sounds like. It sounds like a geiger counter XD

... sounds different after conversion ... what program are you using to convert?

i personally use audacity. export the track as an .ogg file from madtracker, and it loads up fairly decently into audacity. i've found a couple times there'll be a little blip of distortion every once in a while when i do this, but not much.

I just used WinLame to convert from ogg to mp3. I don't even remember wether the change happened already after exporting to ogg, or only after converting to mp3

well that might be your problem. the .ogg format itself isn't all that clean of a format, and mp3 is similar in quality.

never personally used winlame *... that i can remember ... i think i may have used it once when i was trying to change a format on a song i ripped off somewhere* ... but from what it looks like, it's just a file converter to change file formats. that may very well be the issue.

try looking into audacity. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/index.php there's a bunch of tools in there that i use on almost every track i make. it's got a decent EQ, some effects ... and really makes music production work nicely. yeah, it's an extra part to making the music, but personally it's worth it for the quality.

.... and it's free ^..^ gotta love that part

Haha, thanks for the tip! I'll take a note of that. But, I'm super lazy about the technical aspects lol, so it might take a while before I even download the program, let alone learn how to use it =P

And, you know, I actually didn't have a problem with conversion this time. Just an... occurrence. ^^

The bass sounds flawed already in MadTracker by the way. I find it's hard to do a good bass with any freeware VST plugins I know. I actually made a sample out of Superwave, and then did some weird filtering and/or compression on that I don't even remember exactly, to get a sound that I liked, but I couldn't get it absolutely right.
